Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery

Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Repair is a type of plastic surgery to restore function and to improve the incomplete formation of the upper lift of the roof of the mouth.

Most Clefts can be repaired through specialized plastic surgery techniques to improve the patent’s ability to eat, speak, hear and breathe, and to restore a more normal appearance and function. However, the extent of the defect, age of the patient and the effects of the previous surgeries (if there was any), will affect the outcome of the procedure.

For patients who only have a Cleft Lip, it is recommended to only have 1 to 2 surgeries. However, patients who have both will need more because it entails doing the Cleft Lip surgery first, then doing the Cleft Palate after 3 to 6 months.
